The first test of Waymo Robotáxis outside the United States will go to Tokyo from next year

The first Waymo Robotax Test Wave outside the United States is already defined: Japan! Yesterday (16), the company – part of the alphabet – announced that it will take its autonomous cars to Tokyo, Japanese capital, by the beginning of 2025.

Understand:

  • Waymo robothax will be first tested outside the United States, and the chosen destination is Japan;
  • Autonomous vehicles will be sent to Tokyo in early 2025;
  • The initiative is part of a Waymo project that seeks to adapt robotax to different challenges of traditional operation areas;
  • In the case of Tokyo, these challenges will be to drive along the left track and face a densely populated urban environment.

The news is the result of a Waymo collaboration with Nihon Kotsu (the largest Taxi provider of Tokyo and Limusines) and the Japanese application Go Taxi. “We will learn how Waymo can serve tokyo residents and become a beneficial part of the city’s transport ecosystem,” the statement says.

The initiative is part of the program “Road trip“(An expression used to refer to the Waymo car), which aims to bring the company robotax to regions where driving conditions are different from the areas where Waymo works traditionally.

In the case of Tokyo, the company states that, as a challenge, “our driver will learn and adapt to left -wing traffic and the new management nuances associated with the operation in one of the most densely populated urban environments in the world”.

The Waymo Robotáxis will arrive in Tokyo by 2025 and Nihon Kotsu will monitor the maintenance and management of the vehicle. At first, manual driving of autonomous cars to point out the key areas of the capital such as Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, Chūō, Shinagawa and Kōtō.
