All about Artificial intelligence
The debate on the reproduction of prejudice by artificial intelligence systems has been passing for some years. Now researchers at the University of Cornell say that this technology can also reinforce cultural stereotypes in writing, which makes it more generic and causes that global southern users look north -Americans.
Understand:
- AI attendees can make writing more generic and stereotyped, warns scientists;
- In a new study, the AI made the language of Indian participants more like that of the United States;
- In addition, automatic filling suggestions were based on the preferences of the North -Americans;
- Needing to adapt the suggestions to their linguistic and cultural repertoire, the Indians had lower productivity, and with this, the attendees of the AI were less useful.

As the team explains, the most popular IA tools (such as Chatgpt) are developed mainly by North -American companies, but are used throughout the planet, including 85% of the world’s world population.

For the study, Cornell researchers gathered 59 people from India and 59 in the United States and asked them to write on cultural topics.
Half of the participants in each country did the work independently and the other half used a AI wizard who gave short automatic suggestions.
The keys written by the participants were recorded and whether or not they accepted the AI suggestions. According to the team, the assistant wrote the two most similar nationalities: on the other hand, it caused a fall in productivity to the Indians, who often had to correct suggestions.

For example, in terms of topics like favorite food or holidays, AI wizard suggestions were based on the preferences of the North -Americans (Pizza and Christmas). The team also revealed that if an Indian participant was trying to write the name of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, to talk about a public figure, Ai would suggest Scarlett Johansson or Shaquille O’Neil as automatic filling after “S”.
AI Writing Wizard was less useful for Indian participants
The analysis also states that although the Indians accepted more suggestions for the North -Americans, they ended up being so useful. This is because the answers needed to be more edited to coincide with the style of writing and the cultural repertoire of the Indians in each subject.
“The use of IA in writing can lead to cultural and homogenization of language.
