Robot with backpack The jet can make their first stable flight

Scientific work is sometimes slow but rewarding when you achieve your goal. Check out these researchers from the Italian Technology Institute.

As we showed here at Digital appearanceIn August last year, the project of a robot that carried a kind of armor by Iron Man was presented. It is the set of a jetpack (Jet’s backpack) with two other propellants coming out of the hands of the humanoid.

Today, almost ten months later, the team has announced a significant breakthrough in the experiment: Ironcub3 has managed to take off and a stable (though short) flight for the first time.

As you can see in the video, the time in the air is quite short. This shows the difficulty of promoting a flight like this, and indicates that Tony Stark in the real world would not have an easy life.

Imagine -you control the 4 propellers in a harmonious and coordinated way not to unbalance in the air. Add -to natural factors, such as the wind. This is the challenge of Ironcub3. Oh, and he did almost everything “sun”: thanks to flight control systems based on artificial intelligence.

Meet Ilcub3

  • According to scientists, Humanoid has several parts of titanium, as well as coatings to withstand heat.
  • This is due to the fact that the 4 propellants reach a temperature of almost 800 ° C.
  • As you can see in the photos, it is soft and is less than 1 meter high.
  • Its total weight, along with the jets, is about 70 pounds.
  • The thrust of the flight (that is, the vertical force) reaches 1,000 N (about 225 LBF).

  • Inside, the robot has a set of sensors on board, which includes an inertial unit of measure, strength sensors and a depth camera.
  • Researchers say this package is sturdy enough to deal with extreme operation environments.
  • And this is the idea of the team: that one day Ironcub3 can work in rescue operations.
  • Oh, one last detail is this face.
  • The story is as follows: the engineers decided to take a child robot designed for the AI research to start working.
  • Since they did not exchange the face, today we have a kind of Iron Man mix with the baby reborn.

Rescue operations

The ultimate goal of the experiment is to have humanoids capable of flying to a disaster/emergency place to perform air inspections or to provide important data to remote equipment.

You can also land and walk, overcome obstacles, climb stairs, open doors, etc.

This robot must be extremely useful for the Fire Corps, for example, as you can send it to risky places, preserving the lives of your human employees. This would be valid for a building at risk of collapse or even a forest fire.

Something like this, however, should take a long time: see this interval of almost a year so that IRONCUB3 gets a small stable flight. Italian scientists, however, do not give signs that will give up. Good thing, because it seems to be a promising project of great public use.
