Researchers stated that the old game used as a way to facilitate interactions between different social classes

The game may not have arisen in Egypt
- A group of archeologists found six sculpted designs on rock surfaces in various places on the Abşeron Peninsula and the Gobustan Reserve, both at Azerbaijan.
- They came to the conclusion that these brands served as a board for the game known as “58 holes”.
- The places, however, challenge the alleged origins of the game.
- This is due to the fact that so far it was thought to have emerged in ancient Egypt.
- This question remains unanswered, but researchers made other important discoveries.

Importance for social interactions of the period
In a study published in The European Journal of Archeology, researchers concluded that Azerbaijan’s artifacts were probably used by livestock shepherds and even people in the period. Therefore, the team stated that the old games were a great way to forge social ties.
At certain times of age, specific games were popular regional, suggesting that they helped connect cultures that regularly interacted with each other. This is the case with the “58 holes”, which probably served this purpose in the second millennium BC in Egypt and south -West of Asia, as it was the only game in the whole region.

According to the work, “the rapid diffusion of this game demonstrates the ability of games to act as a social lubricants, facilitating interactions through social borders.”
