Asteroid the size of a football field passes through the earth

This Tuesday (26), at 15h (Brasilia Time), an asteroid 110 meters in diameter of a football field that passes about 885 thousand km from Earth (only twice the distance from here to the Moon). Although it seems too far, this is considered very close in astronomical terms.

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the Space Rock, called 2006 WB, was discovered on November 16, 2006 and offers no risk. “Observations made in 2006 and 2014 allowed astronomers to predict today’s safe approach and rule out any potential impact for the next 100 years,” a statement said this morning.

Of the nearly 40 thousand neo (acronym for objects near Earth) already detected, more than 2,300 were only discovered by 2024, according to the Object Coordination Center, near the ESA land. The agency revealed that in October it has represented more than 450 new objects, the largest number for any month this year.

Asteroid 2006 WB can only be observed through large telescopes

Weekly NASA promotes the panel Asteroid clockIt traces asteroids and quotes that will make relatively close passages to Earth. The table shows the date of the nearest approach, the estimated size of the object, the measure of the measurement and the distance achieved. According to this bank, the 2006 WB asteroid will be approaching Earth again in 2039.

According to the astronomical observation platform TheskyliveThis space rock is found in the constellation of Cetus, the whale, visible in the sky of Brazil, but despite the short distance, since the object is too small, it can only be seen through large telescopes.

Any rock greater than 150 meters that passes less than 7.5 million km from the Earth is called the potentially dangerous object (Pho). NASA estimated the trajectories of all Phos until the end of this century, finding that there is no risk of apocalyptic collision with the planet at least in the next 100 years.
