With incredible 123 years, Henry is the oldest crocodile known in the world and awakens a great interest in science. In addition to longevity, the animal is above the normal size of the species.

More than 10,000 puppies in less than 40 years

According to the Crocworld Conservation Center in South -Africa, where the crocodile has lived since 1985, Henry measures more than 5 meters and weighs 700 pounds. An average crocodile of the Nile, a species in question, can grow up to 4.5 meters and weigh around 410 pounds.

It is believed that Henry was born in 1900 among the swamps of the Okavango Delta in Botsuana, Africa. On arrival in Crocworld, he evaluates at least six women, leading their guardians to estimate that the animal generated more than 10,000 puppies in less than 40 years.

The animal’s anniversary is celebrated on December 16, so it should be 124 in 2024. However, as it was born in nature, its accurate birth date is unknown.

Henry is currently sharing his habitat with another crocodile, Colgate, which is about 90 years old. The information comes from Iflscience.

Crocodiles do not show aging signs

  • Several surveys have found that crocodiles are able to reach the age of 100 in captivity.
  • In addition, some scientists suggest that animals may show some degree of negligible senescence, a term used to describe organisms that do not have signs of biological aging.
  • Theoretically, these reptiles do not die of “old age”, but only by external factors such as famine, accidents or diseases.
  • One of the possible explanations of this longevity may be in the intestinal microbiome, which produce substances that increase their resistance.
  • However, science is categorical: crocodiles are not immortal.
