According to Harbin city police, the objectives included critical infrastructure in the areas of energy, transport, communications, military research and technology.

Chinese authorities also included three alleged NSA agents: Katheryn A. Wilson, Robert J. Snelling and Stephen W. Johnson – on a desired list.

According to the State Agency of Xinhua, they would have participated in multiple cyber attacks on Chinese companies, including Huawei, as well as invading games systems for stealing personal athlete data and sensitive information on event organizers.

More details about the case

  • The research also points to the alleged collaboration of the North -American universities of California and Virginia Tech, although it was not explained how these institutions would be involved.
  • The United States Embassy in Beijing did not respond to the requests for comments on the case.
  • The China Foreign Ministry confirmed the complaint and said that it had expressed its dissatisfaction directly in the United States.
  • Spokesman Lin Jian demanded that Washington take a more responsible position on digital safety and stop “unjustly defeated and attack China.”

According to Xinhua, NSA attacks would have used the pre -installed covers on Windows systems to access strategic computers in Heilongjiang.

The Agency also reported that, to make it difficult, agents would have rented servers anonymously in many countries, including regions of Europe and Asia.

Which personal data would have been stolen

The cyber offensive would have been intensified from February 3, the date of the first ice hockey game of the games and the athlete’s registration database, which would have been extracted by the personal and credential information of the authorities.

The case further aggravates the tensions between the two largest economies in the world, which face a rise in commercial and technological disputes.

In recent years, the United States has accused the Chinese hackers of invading U.S. government agencies and allied countries, including military and diplomatic agencies. In response, Beijing has intensified its own complaints against similar actions by the United States.

Last December, China claimed to have detected two U.S. cyber attacks against national companies for stealing intellectual property, but did not reveal which agency was responsible.
