The ruins of a city of almost three thousand years were located in the northern region of Guatemala. Archaeologists found traces of pyramids and monuments that suggest that this was one of the oldest and most important ceremonial centers in Mayan civilization.

Called “Los Abuelos”, the city is located about 21 kilometers from the Uaxactun archeological site in the department of Petén. It was named after the discovery of sculptures from an “ancestral couple” found in the site.

The city’s architectural planning impressed archeologists

Researchers responsible for the discovery state that the city dates from the period “average pre-classical”, between 800 and 500 BC in total, covers an area of about 16 square kilometers.

The site has notable architectural planning, with pyramids and monuments sculpted with a unique iconography in the region. Nearby, archeologists also found a pyramid 33 meters high with pre-classical murals and a unique channel system.

The set of these three locations forms an urban triangle so far unknown. These discoveries allow to rethink the understanding of the ceremonial and socio -political organization of Mayan civilization. The information comes from Sciencealert.
