Why do dogs chase their tails?

First, it is important to consider whether to pursue your tail is an eventual or obsessive act of the dog. In the first case, if the action does not cause damage to the animal, there is nothing to worry about, but if it is a repetitive habit, it is good to pay attention.

According to an article recently published, there are many reasons why a dog can pursue its own tail: curiosity for its own body (in the case of puppies), boredom, release of energy or even the appearance of an injury.

Puppies, for example, are extremely curious and, like children, in the first months of life they are discovering the world and their own body. Therefore, chasing your tail can be a joke act, which often disappears in adulthood.

Another reason raised is boredom. Dogs that spend a lot of time alone, without physical stimuli, can pursue their tail as a way of entertaining and releasing the accumulation of energy. If so, it is advisable to increase the time to live with the animal, invest in tours and games.

Equipped with great intelligence, the dog can also pursue his own tail as a strategy to draw attention. If the animal feels apart, this and other behaviors may arise to attract the owner’s attention to herself.

Now, if the dog pursues its own tail obsessively, this may be a sign of alert, as this behavior may have physical or even psychological causes.

Like humans, dogs can also suffer from anxiety. Living in a small space or being continuously chained, suffering from aggression of another animal or the tutor itself, little or no socialization and an earlier trauma are triggers that can activate in the animal the habit of pursuing its own tail.

In addition to these causes, this behavior may also indicate more delicate situations such as flea infestation and ticks, pain, infection and even cancer. In these cases, it is recommended to schedule an appointment with a trusted veterinarian to investigate the deepest case.
